The Bangladesh Army stated that it was compelled to use force in self-defense during the recent unrest in Gopalganj, urging the public to remain calm and not be misled by rumours or misinformation.

In a press release issued on Thursday, Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said that a group of unruly individuals launched coordinated attacks in Gopalganj Sadar on July 16 during a public gathering organized as part of a political party’s July march.

According to ISPR, the mob engaged in acts of vandalism and arson, targeting key installations and government vehicles. Several police personnel and journalists were initially injured in the violence. As the situation escalated rapidly, army personnel and local police intervened and managed to bring the situation under preliminary control.

However, further attacks occurred during the rally, including an assault on the event stage and a violent attack on the district jail, resulting in extensive damage.

ISPR reported that the Army attempted to calm the attackers through repeated loudspeaker announcements. Instead, the attackers responded with heavy volleys of homemade explosives and bricks targeting army personnel, forcing the military to take defensive action.

Eventually, a joint operation by the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the police dispersed the violent crowd.

Under army supervision, those who had sought shelter at Gopalganj Superintendent of Police's office were safely relocated to Khulna. The security forces, acting with professionalism and restraint, were able to restore order and ensure public safety.

The statement further noted that the overall security situation in Gopalganj has now stabilized, with a curfew still in place as imposed by local authorities. The Army, BGB, police, RAB and other administrative bodies are working in close coordination on the ground.

Praising the people of Gopalganj for their patience and cooperation during the violence, ISPR reiterated its appeal to the public: remain calm, avoid rumours and support law enforcement.

The Bangladesh Army remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting national sovereignty and public security, the statement concluded.
