BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday strongly condemned the violent attack on National Citizen Party’s (NCP) ‘March to Gopalganj’ programme, calling for immediate and strict action against those responsible.

In a statement, Fakhrul described the incident as a “heinous act” allegedly carried out by supporters of Awami League, whom he labelled as “terrorists of the fascist regime.”

“After the fall of autocratic Awami League government through student-led mass movement, certain elements are again attempting to destabilise the country for their own benefit,” he said.

Fakhrul claimed the attack; which reportedly included cocktail explosions, the torching of vehicles belonging to the UNO and police and injuries to law enforcement personnel, is part of a broader effort to create unrest.

Due to the serious deterioration in law and order, Fakhrul said Awami League’s cohorts are now raising their heads and becoming aggressive to exploit the situation by creating chaos in the country and putting the interim government in trouble.

“There is no alternative but to suppress these miscreants with an iron hand,” the BNP leader asserted.

He also urged people from all walks of life; irrespective of political affiliation, to unite in defense of democracy, voting rights, public safety and to prevent the resurgence of fascism.

“If we fail to act now, the country’s independence and sovereignty may once again come under threat,” he warned.

Fakhrul demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those behind the attack on the NCP rally, and extended his wishes for a swift recovery to the injured police personnel.
