A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure and freezing of properties belonging to former Bangladesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his wife in the United States and Malaysia amid a graft probe.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Monday following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). ACC Deputy Director Md Hafizur Rahman filed the application seeking to confiscate assets allegedly acquired beyond Benazir’s known sources of income.
According to court documents, the order covers movable assets worth $430,000 in Buffalo, New York, two accounts held by Benazir at Standard Chartered Bank in the US, and two accounts at CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad in Malaysia.
The ACC investigation alleges that Benazir amassed wealth totaling approximately Tk 94.4 million (about $860,000) beyond his legal income during his tenure as Bangladesh’s top police officer. The commission also informed the court that Benazir was attempting to transfer ownership of various assets through entities he owns or is linked to, prompting the request for seizure to ensure fair investigation and justice.
Benazir served as IGP from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. Prior to that, he was Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
