Australian actor Julian McMahon, best known for his roles in the TV series Charmed and Nip/Tuck, has died of cancer in the United States at the age of 56.

His wife, Kelly, confirmed his passing in a statement to Deadline on Friday.

Born in Sydney in 1968, McMahon started his career as a model before transitioning to television, first in Australia and later in the U.S. He rose to fame playing the demon Cole Turner in Charmed (2000–2005), and later starred as a morally ambiguous plastic surgeon in Nip/Tuck (2003–2010), earning an Emmy nomination in 2005.

"I’m heartbroken," wrote Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano on Instagram. "Losing him feels unreal. Too soon. Too unfair. Rest, my friend. I’ll carry your laugh with me."

Warner Bros. Television, producers of Nip/Tuck, paid tribute to McMahon in a brief statement on Facebook, honouring his contribution to the show.
McMahon also appeared in films, notably as the villain Doctor Doom in two Fantastic Four movies. More recently, he starred with Nicolas Cage in The Surfer, presented at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

His final screen appearance was in Netflix’s The Residence, released this year, where he portrayed the Australian prime minister.
