The Holy Ashura is being observed across the country today (Sunday) with religious solemnity, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).

Marking the 10th day of Muharram in the Hijri year 1447, Ashura holds profound religious significance for Muslims around the world. Known as the Day of Karbala, it is remembered as a day of mourning and reflection.

On this day in 680 AD, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family members and 72 devoted followers, embraced martyrdom on the banks of the Euphrates River in Karbala, Iraq. They sacrificed their lives while standing against injustice and tyranny, upholding the principles of truth, justice and righteousness in Islam.

Their supreme sacrifice remains a timeless example in the history of humanity and an inspiration for all striving for justice and peace.

On the eve of Ashura, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus paid deep tribute to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the other martyrs of Karbala. In his message, he described the Holy Ashura as a deeply mournful, yet significant and glorious day.

"On this solemn day of Holy Ashura, I pay my deepest respect to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), the cherished grandson of our belove1d Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and to all who were martyred in the desert of Karbala," said Dr Yunus.

He noted that Islam is a religion of truth, justice and peace. "To uphold these sacred values, Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family and companions, was martyred by the forces of the tyrant Yazid on the 10th of Muharram. Their sacrifice remains a symbol of courage and steadfastness in the face of oppression," he added.

Dr Yunus also mentioned that several significant events in Islamic tradition are believed to have occurred on this day, including the creation of the universe. He cited Hadiths that highlight the importance the Prophet (PBUH) placed on fasting during Ashura.

"Let us embrace the teachings and spirit of this holy day by engaging in good deeds, seeking closeness to Almighty Allah, and striving to establish justice, equality and peace in society," the Chief Adviser urged.

He concluded by expressing his hope for the unity, solidarity, and continued progress of the Muslim Ummah.

The day is being observed as a public holiday. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels are airing special programmes, while newspapers and online portals have published special supplements highlighting the significance of Ashura.

Special prayers and discussions are being held at mosques and religious institutions across the country, including Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and the Islamic Foundation, to mark the occasion.

The Muslim devotees will bring out a Tazia procession at different places across the country including the Dhaka city marking the day.
