Bangladesh will observe the holy Ashura on Sunday, marking the 10th day of Muharram in the Hijri year 1447, with deep reverence and solemnity.
This day holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide as it commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Ashura stands as a poignant reminder of the tragic events of Karbala in 680 AD, where Imam Hossain (RA), alongside his family members and 72 loyal companions, sacrificed their lives on the banks of the Euphrates in Iraq. They laid down their lives to uphold the values of truth and justice against the oppressive forces of Yazid. Their martyrdom remains an enduring symbol of courage and commitment to the principles of Islam, a faith rooted in peace and justice.
In a message issued on the eve of Ashura, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid heartfelt tribute to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala, describing the day as both sorrowful and gloriously significant for the Muslim Ummah.
“On this mournful day of Ashura, I extend my deepest respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and all who were martyred in Karbala,” said Professor Yunus. He highlighted that the sacrifices made on this day continue to inspire humanity to stand firm against oppression and injustice.
Professor Yunus also pointed out that many pivotal events in the history of creation are believed to have occurred on Ashura. Citing Hadith, he noted the emphasis placed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on observing two days of fasting during this period as a mark of devotion.
“Let us embrace the profound lessons of Ashura by doing more good deeds, striving to come closer to Almighty Allah, and working to establish equality, justice, and peace in our society,” Professor Yunus said. He also prayed for unity, solidarity, and continued progress of the Muslim community worldwide.
Sunday has been declared a public holiday in Bangladesh. To mark the occasion, Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private channels will broadcast special programmes, while newspapers and online media will publish features highlighting the day’s importance.
Special prayers and discussions focusing on the values of Ashura will be held at mosques across the country, including at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The Islamic Foundation will also organise events to reflect on the sacrifices made at Karbala and their enduring message for humanity.
