One held with VOIP equipment in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) has arrested a man in possession of a large quantity of equipment used for illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) operations from Halishahar area of Chattogram city.

The raid was conducted at around 10 PM on Tuesday in a multi-storey building located in B-Block of Halishahar residential area. 

The operation was carried out jointly by RAB, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and National Telecom Monitoring Center (NTMC).

The arrested individual has been identified as Mizan Khan, 31, son of Jamshed Khan from Sandwip police station area of Chattogram district.

During the raid, authorities recovered 30 SIM boxes, 10 high-powered servers, approximately 10,000 mobile SIM cards, several routers, computers and other networking equipment.

RAB-7 Senior Assistant Director (Media) ARM Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the arrest and stated that the gang had been operating illegal international VOIP call services. This activity has been causing the government significant financial losses, amounting to crores of taka in lost revenue. 

He further said that the gang acquired mobile SIM cards under false identities and used them in their operations.

During initial interrogation, Mizan Khan confessed to being a member of illegal VOIP operation. 

RAB is currently working to identify other members of the group based on information obtained from him.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused, who has since been handed over to the local police station.
