After around eight years of expiry of the tenure, the government has formed an 11-member ad-hoc committee to manage the activities of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, according to a press release issued by the National Freedom Fighters' Council on Tuesday.
Valiant freedom fighter Md Naeem Jahangir will be the chair of the ad-hoc body comprising the following as members: Maj (Retd) Syed Munibur Rahman, Sadek Ahmed Khan, Syed Abul Bashar, Sirajul Haque, Md Mansur Ali Sarkar, Anil Baran Roy, Nurul Islam, Abdullah Hil Shafi, Jahangir Kabir and Engr Zakaria Ahmed.
The committee has been tasked with organizing elections within the next six months and handing over responsibilities to an elected body.
According to the press release, the committee was formed based on Section 6(N) and Sections 14(4) and (5) of the National Freedom Fighters' Council Act (Jatiya Muktijoddha Council - JAMUKA), 2022 (Amended Ordinance 2025), with approval from the Council's 98th meeting.
The committee will perform its duties in accordance with the constitution of the registered Muktijoddha Sangsad, as well as applicable laws and regulations.
It is noted that the tenure of the Central Command Council, led by Helal Morshed Khan (Bir Bikram), ended on June 8, 2017.
Following a High Court directive, the government appointed administrators at the central, district, and upazila levels on July 19, 2017.
However, the appointment process faced several complications, and freedom fighters have long been demanding fresh elections.
