NBR recovers Tk 994cr in crackdown on tax evaders 

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has recovered Tk 994 crore over a nine-month period as part of its nationwide crackdown on tax and revenue evasion. 

According to a press release issued on June 24, the operation was carried out between September 2024 and May 2025 by various field offices under the Customs and Income Tax departments, as well as intelligence units of the NBR. In total, 16,572 drives were conducted, identifying Tk 6,246 crore in evaded taxes.

Among the key contributors, the Customs Houses conducted 2,215 drives and successfully recovered the full amount of Tk 183 crore in evaded duties. The Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerates carried out 6,803 operations, detecting Tk 513 crore in evasion and recovering Tk 89 crore. 

Meanwhile, the VAT Intelligence Directorate in Dhaka uncovered Tk 1,639 crore in tax evasion from 231 cases, with Tk 240 crore already recovered. The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate also added Tk 73 crore to the recovered total during this period.

On the income tax side, the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) carried out 181 investigations, identifying Tk 366 crore in unpaid taxes and realizing Tk 194 crore.
