The joint forces arrested a panel chairman and a union parishad secretary for their alleged involvement in taking bribes during the distribution of government VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice meant for the underprivileged at Mithamoin upazila in in Kishoreganj.
The arrested—panel chairman Md. Osman Hossain and union parishad secretary Mohammad Alamgir Hossain of Kewarjor Union—were detained on Thursday night in a joint operation led by Captain Abdullah Al Kafi of Itna Army Camp.
According to locals, the two officials were allegedly collecting Tk 1,000 from each VGF beneficiary in exchange for rice, sparking outrage across the community.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team swiftly conducted a raid and apprehended the suspects with the help of local residents. Both were later handed over to Mithamoin Police Station.
Confirming the detention, officer-in-charge Md. Alamgir Kabir said, “The army handed over the two accused to us. Recovery of the distributed rice is underway.
Legal action will be taken following a formal written complaint.”
Residents expressed frustration and anger over the incident, saying the aid was meant for the most vulnerable and should be distributed fairly and transparently.
“This is not just theft—it’s an injustice against the poor,” said one resident. Local authorities have assured that a full investigation is underway and those responsible will face strict action.
