Brazilian champions Botafogo pulled off a stunning upset at FIFA Club World Cup, defeating newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in a tightly contested group stage match.
Despite PSG’s star-studded lineup and overwhelming possession, it was Botafogo’s discipline, defensive solidity and a first-half goal that sealed the memorable victory.
Paris Saint-Germain, who recently celebrated their maiden UEFA Champions League title under Spanish coach Luis Enrique, came into the FIFA Club World Cup as one of the tournament favourites.
Having secured a historic treble and thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, expectations were sky-high for the Parisian giants.
But in a dramatic turn of events, Botafogo; last season’s Brazilian league champions, brought PSG back to earth.
The match’s only goal came in the 36th minute when Brazilian striker Igor Jesus scored with a calm finish, set up by Venezuelan playmaker Jefferson Savarino.
Botafogo then dug in, executing a near-perfect defensive game plan that kept PSG’s attacking arsenal silent.
Despite fielding the likes of Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha, PSG failed to create meaningful chances. They controlled 75% of the possession but managed only two shots on target, compared to Botafogo’s four.
Botafogo didn’t try to match PSG in possession. Instead, they relied on a strong defensive shape and quick counterattacks. Their tall center-backs; 6'6" Brazilian Jair Cunha and 6'4" Argentine Alexsandro Barbosa, neutralized PSG’s aerial threat, especially from set pieces. PSG had 10 corner kicks, but none turned into goals.
Shielding the defense was former Napoli and Everton midfielder Allan, who stood like a wall in midfield, breaking up attacks and frustrating PSG’s rhythm throughout the game.
With this disciplined display, Botafogo not only earned a crucial win but also sent a clear signal that they are a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
