Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called for renewed international focus on the Rohingya crisis, emphasising the urgent need for the safe and dignified repatriation of the displaced community.
In a message issued Thursday night marking World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, Tarique said, “A clear message must be given to the world that the Rohingya problem is very serious.”
He urged the interim government to strengthen diplomatic efforts with Myanmar to create conditions conducive to the voluntary return of more than 1.4 million Rohingya refugees, currently sheltered in camps across Cox’s Bazar, particularly in Ukhia and Teknaf.
Highlighting the global significance of the day, Tarique said it serves to honour refugees and raise awareness among world leaders about their suffering. Drawing a powerful parallel, he recalled the plight of millions of Bangladeshis who were displaced during the 1971 Liberation War.
“The tragic experience of Bangladeshis during the Great Liberation War has not been erased from our memories,” he said.
Despite numerous challenges, he praised the people of Bangladesh for continuing to support the Rohingya, calling it “a shining example of humanity.”
Reaffirming BNP’s position, Tarique said the party “expresses full solidarity with the spirit of World Refugee Day” and remains committed to backing global efforts to ensure the safe and dignified return of all forcibly displaced populations.
He also urged the international community and donor agencies to continue exerting pressure on Myanmar for a sustainable solution, ensuring the Rohingya can return home with honour and security.
