A murder accused escaped from Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on Thursday after physically assaulting a police officer while being escorted to the holding cell.
The escapee was identified as Md. Shariful Islam, 22, son of late Shafik Ahmed, a resident of Haripur village in Dinajpur district.
According to court sources, Shariful is an accused named in the charge sheet of the murder case of 14-year-old Jisan Hossain of Khilgaon. The case is currently at the witness deposition stage.
The incident occurred around 11:30 AM when Shariful attacked on-duty police constable Md. Shahidullah and fled the courtroom premises.
Confirming the matter, sub-inspector Ripon, in-charge of the court's custody cell, said that as the accused was being taken back to the holding cell from the courtroom, he hit the officer and escaped.
DMP Prosecution Division ADC Main Uddin said that Shariful was handcuffed at the time of the escape.
“He managed to loosen the cuffs using a piece of metal and assaulted the police constable before fleeing,” he said.
Authorities have informed Kotwali Police Station, and a manhunt has been launched to rearrest the fugitive.
The process of filing a case was underway regarding the escape.
As of Thursday afternoon, the accused remains at large, he added.
The incident has sparked concern over security measures in court custody protocols.
