Bangladesh reported two more Covid-19 deaths and 25 new infections in the 24 hours ending at 8:00 AM on Monday, amid growing concerns over a fresh wave of the virus.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), one of the deceased was a woman aged between 71 and 80 from Dhaka. The second death involved a 75-year-old resident of Mirsharai in Chattogram, as confirmed by the local civil surgeon’s office.
With these fatalities, the country’s Covid-19 death toll for 2025 has risen to six. Since the first recorded case on March 8, 2020, Bangladesh has reported a total of 29,505 deaths and 2,051,858 cases.
The DGHS, in an advisory issued on June 11, warned of a potential resurgence driven by emerging Omicron sub-variants. Authorities urged the public to wear masks, practice hand hygiene, and avoid large gatherings.
DGHS Director General Dr Md Abu Jafor also recommended booster doses for adults aged 18 and above, particularly for pregnant women, senior citizens, and those with weakened immune systems.
Despite rising cases in neighboring India and a gradual uptick in local positivity rates, compliance with health safety guidelines remains low. So far, there has been little visible enforcement of the renewed advisories.
