A Dhaka court has granted a one-day remand for two suspects in connection with the recent theft of Tk 1.5 million from the vault of an IFIC Bank branch in Keraniganj.

On Sunday, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate AKM Mohiuddin approved the remand of Al Amin Hawlader and Imran Sheikh, alleged accomplices of the bank's night guard, Md Siam, who earlier confessed to his involvement in the heist.
According to the case details, on the night of June 9, a group of individuals broke into the IFIC Bank branch located on the second floor of the Ispahani School and College Market in Rohitpur. Taking advantage of the Eid holidays, the perpetrators accessed the bank by dismantling the exhaust fan in the rear washroom wall. They disabled the CCTV system before breaching the vault and stealing approximately Tk 1.52 million.

Following the incident, a joint operation by the Keraniganj Model Police Station and the Dhaka District South Detective Branch led to the arrest of three suspects. Law enforcement recovered Tk 7.4 lakh from Siam's rented apartment, Tk 2.4 lakh from Al Amin's residence, and Tk 5.4 lakh from Imran's house. Tools used in the break-in, including a grinding machine, crowbars, knives, and the bank's DVR, were also seized.

Siam initially denied involvement, claiming he was outside during the break-in. However, inconsistencies in his statement prompted further interrogation, during which he admitted to orchestrating the theft with the help of the two accomplices.

While the prosecution had sought a seven-day remand for Al Amin and Imran, the court granted one day after hearing both parties. Defence Counsel Abbas Uddin argued against the remand, citing the recovery of the stolen funds and asserting no further custodial interrogation was necessary.

A case has been filed with the Keraniganj Model Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
