Mid-Feb most viable for nat'l polls: Saki

Chief Coordinator of the Ganosanhati Andolan Zonayed Saki appreciated the joint statement after the meeting between the Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and claimed that the mid-February 2026 as the most viable timeframe for the next national parliamentary elections asserting that the country's political, academic and climatic realities render this period most suitable for holding inclusive polls.

"This will resolve the crisis in the state's economy and public life," Saki said on Friday responding to the high-profile meeting in London. He welcomed the dialogue as a potential breakthrough toward political consensus and electoral credibility Saki revealed that his platform had previously communicated to the Chief Adviser their preference for elections to be held in the first half of February 2026. "But that situation has not been created for a long time," he said criticizing the government's earlier declaration of an April election schedule as 'not the right time'.
He underlined the significance of a consensus-driven political climate as a prerequisite for long-awaited institutional reforms. "We think that this environment is important for the country to maintain. This environment will be conducive to reforms," he added. "There was not much progress on reforms due to concerns about the election date for so long. Now we can work on the progress of reforms."

Saki further asserted that the reform trajectory must be guided by popular will expressed through elections. "We are already in the second stage of discussions on reforms. The July Charter will be prepared on the issues on which consensus will be reached based on the highest opinion.

In a significant legal development, Saki noted the initiation of proceedings in the long-stalled trial of the July murder case calling it 'a relief for us'. He stressed, "This situation must be maintained," emphasizing the need for continued political and judicial stability.
