Seven minor children drowned in separate incidents in five districts - Gopalganj, Tangail, Khagrachhari, Kurigram and Thakurgaon.
GOPALGANJ: A fourteen-month-old child drowned in a ditch in Kotalipara Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The incident took place in Kandi Ambari Village under Kushla Union of the upazila at around 11 am.
The deceased was identified as Sohan Sheikh, son of Hamim Sheikh, a resident of the area.
It was known that Sohan fell into a ditch next to the village while his family members were unaware of it.
Later on, the family members rescued him and took to Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the child dead.
Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kotalipara Police Station (PS) Mamunur Rashid confirmed the incident.
DHANBARI, TANGAIL: Two minor children drowned in a pond in Dhanbari Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The incident took place in Mominpur Village under Yadunathpur Union of the upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Sharif, 3, son of Abdul Barek, and Arafat, 4, son of Omar Ali. Both of them were residents of the same village.
According to locals, Sharif and Arafat were playing near a pond at around 8 am. When they did not return home, family members began an extensive search. Later on, the two were rescued from the pond and taken to Dhanbari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhanbari PS SM Shahidullah confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies were handed over to their families.
DIGHINALA, KHAGRACHHARI: A schoolboy drowned in the Maini River in Dighinala Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Md Ariyan, 8, son of Md Jakir Hossain of Dakshin Milonpur area under Kobakhali Union in the upazila. Ariyan was a first grader at Kobakhali Government Primary School.
According to locals, Ariyan went to the Maini River for collecting firewood. At that time, he drowned in the river.
On information, the Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and recovered his body after about an hour of search.
Dighinala PS SI Md Alauddin confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this regard.
ULIPUR, KURIGRAM: A child drowned the Bamni River in Ulipur Upazila of the district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mahit Islam, 7, son of Mamun Mia of Machabandha Village under Chilmari Upazila in the district.
According to locals, Mahit came to his grandfather's house in Hatia Union of the upazila along with his mother on Eid vacation. On Friday, he went to the Bamni River with his mother for a bath, and drowned there.
Later on, locals recovered his body.
Ulipur PS OC Zillur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
THAKURGAON: Two siblings drowned in the Nagar River in Sluicegate area under Haripur Upazila of the district on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Sadia Akhtar, 11, and Saddam Hossain, 6, children of Aminul Islam of Parshuram Jalchatra Village in Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur.
According to locals, the siblings went to bathe in the Nagar River in the afternoon but were swept away by the strong current.
After a frantic search, the body of Sadia was recovered on Thursday evening, while the body of Saddam was recovered on Friday morning.
The siblings went to their maternal grandfather's house on the occasion of Eid.
Haripur PS OC Zakaria Mandal confirmed the incident.
