GOPALGANJ, June 15: Two people including a police officer were killed and at least 20 others injured in a road accident involving six vehicles in Sadar Upazila of the district early Sunday.
The accident took place in Gopinathpur area on the Dhaka-Khulna highway of the upazila at around 3 am.
The deceased were identified as Assistant Town Sub-Inspector (ATSI) of Bhatiapara Highway Police Rafiquzzaman, and Selim Hossain Bepari, the helper of a bus of 'Arman Paribahan'.
Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Mir Md Sajedur Rahman said that a Khulna-bound bus belonging to 'Arman Paribahan', which had departed from Dhaka, was hit from behind by a truck in Gopinathpur area on the highway at early hours. The initial impact caused significant damage to the bus.
While passengers were being rescued, three more buses and a private car collided with each other at the same place in a chain-reaction crash that lasted from 2:30 am to 3:30 am. Two people including the ATSI died on the spot and at least 20 others injured at that time.
Following the accident, police, army personnel, and Fire Service teams arrived at the scene and rescued the injured. The injured were then taken to Gopalganj General Hospital, the OC added.
