Eight people murdered in eight districts

Eight people including a woman were murdered in separate incidents in eight districts - Rangamati, Natore, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Joypurhat, Mymensingh, Patuakhali and Laxmipur.

KAPTAI, RANGAMATI: A young man was shot to death by a group of unidentified armed men in Kaptai Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The shooting incident took place in Phultoli Village under Raikhali Union of the upazila at around 11:40 am.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Hakim, 26, son of late Bahar Ali, a resident of Ghoniakhola area in the same upazila.

According to locals, a group of 9 to 10 armed men, allegedly linked to the JSS (Main Faction), entered the village and fired multiple rounds at Hakim, leaving him dead on the spot.

The incident has triggered panic in the locality, with a heavy sense of tension prevailing.

Confirming the incident, Chandraghona Police Station (PS) Official Imrul Hasan said that police visited the scene upon receiving the report but could not locate the body or gather information from locals.

"We're investigating, but residents are not cooperating," he added.

BARAIGRAM, NATORE: An elderly man, who was injured in a clash between two fractions of Awami League (AL) in Baraigram Upazila of the district, died at Natore Sadar Hospital on Saturday.

Deceased Rowshan Alam Sheikh, 65, son of late Juran Sheikh, was a resident of Dighair Village in Baraigram Upazila.

It was known that two groups of AL led by Jonail Union Juba League President Ariful Islam and Sohel Rana Putu, son of Jonail Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad, had long been at loggerheads. Following this, the two groups locked into a clash equipped with locally-made weapons on Wednesday evening, which left at least seven people including Rowshan injured.
The injured were rescued and taken to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex.

Later on, Rowshan was shifted to Natore Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment.

However, police arrested one Bazlur Rahman in this connection.

Baraigram PS Inspector Golam Sarwar confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

NARAYANGANJ: A brick kiln worker was beaten to death over a scuffle centring drugs dealing at Fatullah in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The incident took place in Narsinhapur Chitashal area of Fatullah at dawn.
The deceased was identified as Swapon, son of late Shahad Ali. He used to live in a rented house owned by Khalek Bepari at Gopchar.

It was known that a group of people forcefully took Swapon out of the house at around 4 am. He was then beaten to death by them. Later on, police recovered his body from Nasinhapur area in the morning and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police assumed that the murder might have been taken place over a scuffle centring drugs dealing in the area.
Sub-Inspector of Fatullah Model PS Ashraful Alam confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are trying to arrest those involved in the killing.

RANGPUR: A woman died after being allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws in Mahiganj area of the district over dowry.

The deceased was identified as Rezwana Dil Afroz, 22.

She died on Friday evening while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Police have, so far, arrested three people including her husband in connection with the incident.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mahiganj PS Abdul Quddus said that a murder case has been filed against five individuals including Rezwana's husband, parents-in-laws and sister-in-law.

"We have already arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in the incident. Drives are going on to capture the remaining accused," the OC said on Saturday.

Family members of the deceased alleged that Rezwana got married with Rezaul Karim about three years back. She had been subjected to repeated abuse since her marriage. At the time of her marriage, her family had paid Tk 5 lakh to Rezaul as dowry. However, the demands allegedly continued.

On June 5 last, Rezwana was reportedly assaulted again for failing to meet further dowry demands. Just three days later, on June 8, she was allegedly doused in kerosene and set ablaze by her husband and in-laws. Initially taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, she was later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment where she passed away.

"She was tortured constantly. When they didn't get more money, they burned her. Instead of saving her, they locked the door and later claimed she tried to commit suicide," said the deceased's father.

Rezwana left behind a one-and-a-half-year-old son.

Police, however, ensured that the investigation is going on and they are trying to arrest all the perpetrators.

JOYPURHAT: A night-guard was beaten to death by his rivals in Panchbibi Upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Obaidur Rahman, 52, son of Shahid Uddin, a resident of Malidah Village under Aymarasulpur Union in the upazila. He was a night-guard at Malidah High School.

Police and the deceased's family sources said that Obaidur had a longstanding dispute with his neighbour Saimuddin over the ownership of a piece of land. Following this, Saimuddin along with his three daughters and sons-in-law attacked on Obaidur in his house while he was taking preparation for going to mosque to perform Juma prayer, and hit him with sticks indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

He was then rescued by his family members and taken to Joypurhat Adhunik Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Panchbibi PS OC Moinul Islam confirmed the incident, saying that the law enforcers arrested five people in this connection and a murder case was filed with the PS.

MYMENSINGH: A youth was murdered over money dispute in Gouripur Upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Humayun Kabir, 24, son of Abdul Kaium, a resident of Sonakandi Village under Sohonati Union in the upazila.

According to local sources, Rana and Badal, residents of the same area, were engaged in a dispute with each other over paying betel leaf bills at a local shop.

Seeing this silly matter, Humayun paid the bill of Tk 10, which enraged them.

The following day, Rana and Badal blocked his way when Humayun was heading towards a nearby market at around 5:30 pm.

Later on, Humayun fled away and took shelter in a nearby shop, where they stabbed and left him injured.

Subsequently, locals rescued him and took to Gouripur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Gouripur PS OC Md Didarul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are trying to nab the accused and legal action would be taken in this regard.

BAUPHAL, PATUAKHALI: A man, who was injured in a clash over land dispute in Bauphal Upazila of the district, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday night.

Deceased Rahim Jomaddar, 55, was a resident of Char Wadel Village under Chandradwip Union in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that Rahim Jomaddar and Kalam Hawlader of the same area were at loggerheads for long over land.

As a sequel to it, the two groups locked into a clash on Wednesday afternoon, which left Rahim Jomaddar critically injured.

He was then rescued and taken to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex first, and then, shifted to the DMCH following the deterioration of his condition.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH at around 10 pm on Thursday while undergoing treatment.

Bauphal PS OC Md Akhteruzzaman Sarker confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with the PS and legal action would be taken in this connection.

RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR: A mentally-challenged man was beaten to death by mob on suspicion of theft in Ramgati Upazila of the district recently.

The incident took place in Ward No. 4 Purba Char Kolakopa Village under Poragachha Union of the upazila. The identity of the deceased, aged about 50, could not be known immediately.

It was known that a group of 10 to 12 people caught the mentally-challenged man in the area suspecting him as a thief, and started beating him indiscriminately, leaving the man critically injured.

The injured was then rescued and taken to Noakhali Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Ramgati PS OC Md Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that investigations are going on and necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
