The monsoon season officially began today with the onset of Asharh, bringing a forecast of continuous rain for the next seven days, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has confirmed.
According to meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick, rainfall will gradually intensify from Monday and continue across the country until June 22. The prolonged showers may lead to waterlogging in some urban areas and increase the risk of landslides in the hilly regions of Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, and Cox’s Bazar.
Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected, with moderate to heavy rainfall likely in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Isolated areas in Rajshahi and Khulna may also see intermittent rain.
Despite the rain, mild heatwaves are persisting over several districts including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Madaripur, Kishoreganj, and parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Mymensingh, and Sylhet. The highest temperature recorded on Saturday was 38.8°C in Dimla, while Bandarban reported the lowest at 24.1°C.
Officials have urged caution during thunderstorms and advised the public to stay indoors upon hearing thunder, citing an uptick in lightning-related casualties in recent weeks.
