Jubo Dal has suspended Gowainghat upazila joint convener Jahid Khan for leading a protest of stone workers which surrounded the cars of two advisers in Sylhet's Jaflong on Saturday.
A press release, signed by Jubo Dal Central Deputy Office Secretary Minhazul Islam Bhuiyan, was issued on Sunday in this regard.
Jahid's primary membership has been cancelled and he has been expelled from the organisation due to clear allegations of involvement in activities against the party discipline, it said.
The organisation will not take responsibility for any misdeeds committed by the suspended Jahid, according to the press release.
On Saturday, stone and sand extraction workers blocked the vehicles of two advisers--Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Energy Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan-- when they were returning after visiting the Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) in Jaflong.
During briefing at the visit site, Rizwana said, "We will no longer allow stone extraction from areas of Sylhet that possess natural beauty and aesthetic appeal. Jaflong is an Ecologically Critical Area. For those involved in stone extraction here, we have already discussed with the Ministry of Tourism to create alternative employment opportunities that support eco-friendly tourism."
This made the workers angry and they held a protest.
