Two people, including a police officer, were killed and at least 20 others injured in a major road accident involving six buses in Gopinathpur, Gopalganj early Sunday.
The accident occurred around 3:00 AM on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md. Sajedur Rahman of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.
The dead were Rafiquzzaman, an ATSI of Bhatiapara Highway Police, and Selim Hossain Bepari, the helper of Arman Paribahan bus.
The OC said that a Khulna-bound bus belonging to 'Arman Paribahan', which had departed from Dhaka, was struck from behind by a truck upon reaching Gopinathpur. The initial impact caused significant damage to the bus. While passengers were being rescued, three more buses and a private car collided at the same spot in a chain-reaction crash that lasted from 2:30 AM to 3:30 AM.
Following the accident, police, army personnel, and fire service teams arrived at the scene and rescued the injured, who were sent to Gopalganj General Hospital.
Traffic on the Dhaka-Khulna highway resumed two hours later after the damaged vehicles were cleared from the road.
