Nat’l Eye Hospital returns to normal after 17-day shutdown

After 17 days of silence, the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital (NIOH)-better known as the national eye hospital-in Dhaka sprang back to life on Saturday, marking a full-scale return to medical services across all departments.

The hospital had remained largely inactive since May 28, when a clash on its premises forced a sudden shutdown. But on Saturday morning, the long-dormant corridors were once again buzzing with doctors, nurses, patients, and a renewed sense of purpose.

From the outpatient booths to emergency wards, medical services resumed in full swing. Doctors were seen attentively treating patients, while anxious relatives waited outside, their faces lit with relief.

"We've been here since early morning. Patients are streaming in. Several have already been admitted," said a doctor, requesting anonymity. "It's hectic, but we're back to doing what we're meant to do."

NIOH Acting Director Dr. Zane Alam confirmed the development, stating:
"All operations have fully resumed. However, for security reasons, we are currently operating under the watchful protection of police and military personnel."

The heightened security stems from concerns following the May 28 incident and related tensions involving a group of patients injured during the July Uprising. According to hospital sources, around 20 individuals who were previously treated but left without informing authorities have twice attempted to re-enter the premises in recent days-only to be turned back by law enforcement.

"They've been classified as absconders under hospital rules. Entry is not permitted," Dr. Alam said firmly.
