A Dhaka court has granted five-day remand for three suspects accused of the brutal murder and dismemberment of a scrap plastic trader in the capital's Sabujbagh area on June 13. Another suspect has given a confessional statement in court.
The three accused, Shukur Ali, Md. Rajib, and Swapan, were remanded following a hearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefat Ullah on Friday. The fourth suspect, Azhar Ali, admitted to his involvement and gave a statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Sub-Inspector Md. Shamsul Amin of Sabujbagh Police Station, who is investigating the case, produced the accused before the court and sought seven-day remand for each, citing the need for custodial interrogation. The court granted five days for each of the three and recorded Azhar's confession.
Police recovered the mutilated body of the victim, Md Zakir Hossain, 55, from a bush in the Baigdia area on Thursday morning. His body had been buried after being cut into six pieces.
According to the case details, Zakir, a resident of Baigdia, went missing on June 4. His wife, Rekha Begum, filed a general diary the following day and later lodged an abduction case on June 10, naming Azhar Ali and several unidentified persons as suspects.
Investigators say Zakir last communicated with his family around midnight on June 4, claiming he was at Azhar's house and had Tk 250,000 with him. Subsequent calls to Azhar's phone went unanswered.
