Google offers voluntary buyouts amid antitrust pressure and cost-cutting drive

Google has begun offering voluntary buyouts to employees across several major divisions as part of a new round of cost-cutting, just as the company braces for potentially sweeping antitrust remedies that could reshape its business.

The buyout offers, which include severance packages, have been extended to staff in Google’s search, advertising, research, and engineering units, according to reports from *The Wall Street Journal* and others. While the exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed, the move is part of broader efforts to streamline operations and control costs.

“Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead,” said Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini in a statement. She added that some remote employees living near Google offices are also being asked to return to hybrid in-person work schedules.

The cost-cutting comes at a crucial moment for the company. Google is currently awaiting a ruling from U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who is overseeing a landmark antitrust case brought by the Department of Justice. The court is considering remedies after concluding that Google’s search engine operates as an illegal monopoly. Proposed actions include banning Google’s multibillion-dollar deals with Apple and others to remain the default search engine, forcing the company to share data with rivals, and possibly requiring the divestiture of its Chrome browser.

Separately, Google is also facing the possibility of having to sell off parts of its digital advertising technology business, after a judge ruled that the company had abused its dominance in the online ad market to suppress competition.

These legal challenges arrive as Google — like many Big Tech companies — is continuing to adjust its workforce following the massive expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Google began its post-pandemic cutbacks by laying off 12,000 employees in early 2023 and has since been gradually downsizing certain divisions.

At the same time, the company is redirecting investment toward artificial intelligence, which is becoming central to the transformation of its search business. Google has been working to shift its traditional search engine into a more conversational, AI-powered experience in response to growing competition from tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft's AI-enhanced Bing.

With nearly 186,000 employees under parent company Alphabet Inc., the current restructuring efforts highlight Google’s need to stay agile amid rising regulatory scrutiny and rapid changes in technology. Judge Mehta’s decision, expected before Labor Day, could trigger further shifts — especially if Google chooses to appeal any mandated structural changes to its business.
