The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a fresh alert for storms likely to hit 10 regions of the country overnight, with wind speeds reaching up to 80 kilometers per hour.
The Met Office, in a special bulletin released on Thursday evening, warned that southerly to south-easterly winds accompanied by rain and thunderstorms may sweep over Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.
River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 2.
Elsewhere, gusty winds ranging from 45 to 60 km/h may occur, for which cautionary signal number 1 has been recommended for inland ports.
The bulletin remains in effect until 1:00 AM on Friday.
Meanwhile, the deep depression that had formed over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara. While the system is weakening, it continues to impact weather conditions, bringing widespread rainfall and gusty winds.
According to the BMD, several parts of the country may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day on Friday as a result of the depression's residual effects.
Authorities are advising residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in coastal and riverine zones.
All maritime and river transport operations have been urged to exercise caution.
