5 held with cement while smuggling to Myanmar

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested five people early Saturday in Cox's Bazar while they were smuggling cement to Myanmar from Bangladesh. 

Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid confirmed the information on Saturday afternoon.

The arrested individuals are Momtaz Ahmed, 50, from Teknaf upazila; Md Arafat, 30; Md Ibrahim, 26; Md Sukkur, 50; and Md Zohor.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Coast Guard personnel conducted a raid in the sea adjacent to Najertek area around 2:00am on Saturday and detained the five along with a boat carrying 340 sacks of cement, said Harun-ur-Rashid.

Legal procedures are underway in this regard, he added.
