A Dhaka court on Saturday issued a travel ban on former Sherpur-1 lawmaker Atiur Rahman Atiq and his wife Shantana Begum, in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.
The order was passed by Md Zakir Hossain Galib, Senior Special Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court, following a petition submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Md Akhtarul Islam, Deputy Director of the ACC's Public Relations Division, confirmed the development. He stated that the ACC is currently looking into multiple allegations against Atiq and his family members. The charges include accumulation of illegal wealth and acquiring assets disproportionate to known sources of income.
In the petition, the ACC expressed concern that the accused might attempt to flee the country to avoid the investigation, prompting the request for a travel ban.
After reviewing the appeal, the court granted the ACC’s request to ensure that the probe proceeds without obstruction.
