Efforts underway to orchestrate another '1/11': Nahid

The convener of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), Nahid Islam, has alleged that efforts are being made to stage a political setup akin to the infamous 1/11 scenario in Bangladesh once again.

In a Facebook post made late Friday, Nahid expressed concern over what he described as foreign-backed plans to destabilize the country and undermine its sovereignty.
In his post, Nahid wrote,"Our aim is to free Bangladesh's politics from all forms of hegemony and ensure it is run independently and sovereignly. Time and again, efforts have been made to divide the nation, weaken national unity, and keep Bangladesh fragile. Since the banning of Awami League's political activities, there have been renewed efforts, particularly from Delhi, to create instability and sow division in the country. These moves are part of a broader scheme to obstruct democratic transformation and orchestrate another 1/11-style arrangement."

The NCP leader emphasized the need for patriotic, pro-Bangladesh, and devout students and citizens to unite against fascism and imperialism. He called on military officers and soldiers loyal to Bangladesh to remain vigilant in defense of the nation's sovereignty.

Addressing Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who has emerged as a symbolic figure in recent political discourse, Nahid urged him to fulfill the promises made to the public regarding reform, justice, and voting rights:"Dr. Yunus must take responsibility to ensure that political solutions are found while still in a leadership role. The July Declaration must be issued on time, and fundamental reforms must be inscribed in a 'July Charter' before elections are held. The July Massacre must be addressed with a visible justice process, including a clear roadmap for accountability. Elections for a new Constituent Assembly and Legislature must be held simultaneously to establish a new constitution."

Earlier in the day, Nahid addressed a youth gathering organized by the NCP’s youth wing, Jatiyo Juboshokti, at a hotel in Dhanmondi. Attended by youth organizers from across the country, the event highlighted concerns over growing instability and called for national unity in the face of looming challenges.

"Our political identity and existence revolve around the July Uprising," said Nahid.

"The more we embrace July, the further we will advance. Unfortunately, some who participated in the uprising now view it merely as a regime change, which contradicts the NCP’s fundamental position. We have always sought structural reform, not just a change in power. Clinging to the old constitution while aiming for power is something we oppose. What we now need is organized strength."

He urged the youth to rise and play an active role in implementing the July Declaration, calling it a tribute to those martyred and injured during the movement.

"When the nation is seeking structural reform, some young leaders seem desperate for power. At this critical time, uniting the patriotic youth is our foremost objective. They are the ones who will protect the country and fight for a new republic. Juboshokti must instill patriotism and core values among the youth," Nahid added.
