Road mishaps claim 14 lives in seven districts

A total of 14 people including two minor children were killed and at least 12 others injured in separate road accidents in seven districts - Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Jhenidah, Laxmipur, Habiganj, Narail and Rajbari.

KISHOREGANJ: Two pedestrians were killed and at least 10 others injured when a truck hit them in Bhairab Upazila of the district on Friday.

The accident took place in Akbarnagar Bus Stand Bazar area on the Kishoreganj-Bhairab regional highway under the upazila at around 8 am.

The deceased were identified as Md Halim Mia, 60, a resident of Akbarnagar Village, and Angur Mia, 45, of Jagrarchar Munshibari area in the same upazila.

According to police and local sources, a Bhairab-bound wood-laden truck from Kishoreganj hit the pedestrians at Akbarnagar Bus Stand Bazar in the morning after losing its control over the steering, which left the two dead on the spot.

Besides, ten other people were also injured when two auto-rickshaws overturned during the accident. They were taken to different hospitals in the upazila.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to a local hospital morgue for autopsies.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhairab Highway Police Station (PS) Md Sahabur Rahman confirmed the incident.

MYMENSINGH: Four people including two children were killed in separate road accidents in Gafargaon and Bhaluka upazilas of the district.

Two minor boys were killed in two separate road accidents in Gafargaon Upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Imamuddin, 7, son of Habil of Borobaria Village under Borobaria Union, and Md Ali, 3, son of Kanchon Sheikh of Uthuri Village in the upazila.

According to locals, a police pickup van ran over Imamuddin from behind when he was returning home from school in Borobaria area in the afternoon, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued him and rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), where the on-duty doctor declared the child dead upon arrival.

On the other hand, Md Ali was hit by an unknown vehicle in front of a tea stall in Uthuri Village of the upazila in the same afternoon. He died on spot.

Gafargaon PS OC Md Shibirul Islam confirmed the incidents, adding that necessary steps would be taken in these connections.
Meanwhile, two more individuals have lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Bhaluka Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accidents took place in Hajirbazar and Seedstore areas of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Golam Mostafa, 48, a resident of Baniakazi Village in Muktagacha Upazila, and Sabuj Mia, 45, a resident of Borta Village in Bhaluka Upazila of the district.

According to the witnesses, at around 7:30 am, a truck hit a passenger-carrying Mahindra (local vehicle) in Hajirbazar area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, which left Golam Mostafa dead on the spot.

In another incident, at around 10 am, Sabuj Mia was severely injured after being hit by a motorcycle while he was crossing the road in Seedstore area.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while undergoing treatment.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Bharadoba Highway PS Abul Kalam confirmed the incidents, adding that legal actions would be taken in these regards.

JHENIDAH: A teenage boy was killed when a truck hit his motorcycle in Shailkupa Upazila of the district on Thursday noon.

The accident took place in Baradah area on the Jhenidah-Kushtia highway under the upazila at around 12 pm.

The deceased was identified as Jisan, 17, son of Mannan Hossain, a resident of the area. He was an SSC examinee from Garaganj Secondary School this year.

Police and local sources said that Jisan was returning home riding on a motorcycle after submitting his practical examination book at Garaganj Secondary School.

On the way, a truck coming from opposite direction hit his motorbike in Baradah area on the Jhenidah-Kushtia highway at noon, leaving him dead on the spot.

Arappur Highway PS OC Mrityunjoy Biswas confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

RAIPUR, LAXMIPUR: A young man was killed in a road accident in Raipur Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The accident took place near LM Pilot High School on the Raipur-Chandpur regional highway at around 11 am.

The deceased was identified as Raihan Hossain, 24, son of Siraj Sarder, a resident of Ward No. 3 under Raipur Municipality.

It was known that a truck hit a motorcycle carrying Raihan near LM Pilot High School on the regional highway coming from the opposite direction, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Raipur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the youth dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

The law enforcers, however, seized the killer truck and arrested its driver.

Raipur PS OC Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this connection.

HABIGANJ: Two people were killed after a drum truck hit a motorcycle in the district on Wednesday night.

The accident took place in front of Bibiana Power Station of Majlishpur area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Aushkandi Union in the upazila at around 11:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Ijajul Islam, 26, son of Md Samir Mia, hailed from Niamatpur Village under Aushkandi Union in Nabiganj Upazila, and Mainul Karim Iman, 24, son of Maju Mia, a resident of Pitua Majpara in the same upazila.

Police sources said that Ijajul and Iman went to Goalabazar in Osmaninagar for purchasing mobile phone at night. When they were returning home after purchasing the mobile phone, a drum truck hit their bike in Majlishpur area, which left the duo dead on the spot.

After receiving information, Sherpur Highway police rushed to the scene and made clear the traffic movement on the highway.
Sherpur Highway PS OC Abu Taher confirmed the incident, saying that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their relatives.

NARAIL: A motorcyclist was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Lohagara Upazila of the district on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Salman Mallik, 20, son of Shahid Mallik, a resident of Doa-Mallikpur Village in the upazila.
According to police and the deceased's family members, Salman and two others were returning to their village from Lohagara at night riding on a motorcycle.

On the way, the motorcycle lost control over its steering and hit a roadside roller in front of the residence of Azizur Doctor at around 8 pm. All of the three riders sustained critical injuries in the collision.

Later on, the injured were rescued and rushed to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared Salman dead.

The two injured co-riders are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members following the completion of legal formalities.

Lohagara PS OC Shariful Islam confirmed the incident.

RAJBARI: Three people were killed in separate road accidents in the district on Wednesday.

Two gold traders were killed after a sand-laden drum truck collided with their motorcycle on the Rajbari-Kushtia regional highway in Pangsha Upazila on Wednesday noon.

The accident occurred in Naopara area near Machpara Bus Stand under the upazila at around 2:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Md Korban Sheikh, 55, and Ashok Kumar Roy, 60. Both of them were residents of Kamalapur area under Khoksha Municipality in Kushtia.

It was known that the two, who were neighbours and business associates, had travelled to Pangsha earlier in the day to attend a Mahajan Halkhata programme.

Md Bakul Hossain, a neighbour of the deceased, said that a sand-laden drum truck from Kushtia rammed into their motorcycle when the two were returning home from the event, leaving the duo critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed them to Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared the duo dead.

Dr Tansusma of Pangsha Upazila Health Complex said that both the men had succumbed to their injuries before reaching the hospital.

Pangsha Model PS OC Md Salauddin confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are currently working to identify the killer truck and apprehend its driver.

Earlier, a farmer was killed in another road accident in the same upazila at noon.

The accident took place in Habaspur Mathpara area under Habas Union in the upazila at around 12:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Lokman Hossain, son of Babor Ali Sheikh, a resident of Mathpara area.

It was known that Lokman went to a local bazar to buy some essential items. On his way back home, a speedy motorcycle hit him from behind, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

However, two separate cases were filed with Pangsha PS in these connections.
