Lightning kills 4 in Thakurgaon, Pirojpur, Dinajpur

Four people including a woman and her daughter were killed and another was injured by lightning strikes in separate incidents in three districts - Thakurgaon, Pirojpur and Dinajpur.

THAKURGAON: A farmer was killed after being struck by lightning in Ranisankail Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Gangua Village under Lehemba Union of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Altafur Rahman, 55, son of late Bhubon Ali, a resident of the same village.

It was known that thunderbolt struck on Altaf when he was harvesting paddy at his field next to the house during rain, which left him dead on the spot. Later on, the family members and locals recovered the body.

Lehemba Union Parishad Member Abdul Malek confirmed the incident.

PIROJPUR: A teenage boy was killed by lightning strike in Mathbaria Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Vaski Village under Tikikata Union of the upazila at around 11 am.

The deceased was identified as Md Shakil Akon, 17, son of Md Yusuf Akon, a resident of the same area.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mathbaria Police Station (PS) Abdullah Al Mamun said that thunderbolt struck on Shakil when he was going to take his cattle back to the house from a nearby field during rain, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued him and took to Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the teenager dead, the OC added.

CHIRIRBANDAR, DINAJPUR: A woman and her daughter were killed and another was injured by lightning strike in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Kakoli Rani Roy, 32, wife of Mahadev Chandra Roy of Mitrabati Village in the upazila, and their daughter Joyashree Roy, 12.

Chirirbandar PS OC Md Abdul Wadud said that thunderbolt struck them while they were drying paddy on the house yard at around 4:30 pm, which left Joyashree dead on the spot and her mother critically injured.

Injured Kakoli Rani was then rescued and taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where she died at around 7 pm while undergoing treatment, the OC added.

Meanwhile, a man was also injured after being struck by lightning in another incident and is currently undergoing treatment at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

The injured person is Sakhawat Hossain, 35, son of Sirajul Islam, a resident of Laxmipur Village under Amarpara Union in the same upazila.
