The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday assigned Secretary Md Ruhul Alam Siddique to oversee the routine functions of the Foreign Secretary until further notice.
Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin relinquished his responsibilities earlier, though the Ministry has not disclosed further details regarding the matter.
"The office order will come into effect on Friday," a senior official at the Ministry told reporters, referring to the administrative changes.
Jashim Uddin was appointed as the 27th Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh in September last year.
On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain clarified that there was "no issue of removal" concerning Jashim Uddin, stating that the Foreign Secretary himself wished to step away from his current responsibilities.
"Actually, there is no issue of removal. He (FS) wants to leave this responsibility for various reasons. He remains in service, but his role will change. He will leave his current position within the next couple of days," Adviser Touhid told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Bangladesh's Ambassador to the United States, Asad Alam Siam, is likely to be appointed as the next Foreign Secretary. Until his official appointment, an acting Foreign Secretary will be in place.
If there are no further changes in the government's decision, Ambassador Siam will become the 28th Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh.
