In light of the growing seismic risks in the region, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, hosted a high-level workshop titled "Strengthening Multi-Hazard Preparedness: Focus on Earthquake and Urban Resilience" at the Multipurpose Hall of the BIAM Foundation in Dhaka on Wednesday, says a press release. Bangladesh, located at the intersection of active tectonic plates and characterized by rapid urbanization, remains highly vulnerable to earthquakes. The recent tremors in Myanmar and Thailand in March 2025 have highlighted the urgency of enhancing preparedness measures to mitigate urban seismic risks. Building on previous initiatives like the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) and the Urban Resilience Project (URP)-including the Training, Exercises, and Drills (TED) programme-the workshop provided a timely platform to engage key stakeholders in dialogue and strategy formulation. Participants discussed best practices and practical steps to enhance multi-hazard preparedness and improve urban resilience. The workshop was graced by several distinguished guests: Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, Adviser, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (Chief Guest), Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (Special Guest), Sonali Dayaratne, Resident Representative a.i., UNDP Bangladesh (Special Guest), Razwanur Rahman, Director General, Department of Disaster Management (Chair). Speaking at the event, UNDP emphasized the need for inclusive, proactive disaster planning and continued collaboration between development partners, government agencies, and communities to ensure resilient urban development.
