Separate courts sentenced 10 people including two women to death in different murder cases in Sirajganj, Kishoreganj and Habiganj.
SIRAJGANJ: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced six people to death for the abduction and murder of a vegetable vendor in 2017.
Sirajganj Senior District and Sessions Court Judge M Ali Ahmed handed down the verdict at noon in absence of the convicts.
In addition to the death penalty, the court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, and in default of the payment, they will have to suffer one month of simple imprisonment.
The six convicts are: Khaja Mia, a resident of Pardhundia Village under Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha District; Enamul, of Harinathpur Bishpukur Village of the same upazila; Mojahid of Dargapara Village; Md Bosu from Pardhundia Village; Md Saidul Islam, of Madardah Purba Para Village; and Milon Sarkar of Ramnagar (Hatbari) Village under Saghata Upazila in Gaibandha District.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Advocate Shakil Mohammad Sharifur Haider alias Rafique Sarkar confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, a vegetable vendor, named Nazmul Islam, left for Dhaka after buying vegetable from Chakgouri Bazar at the noon of August 10, 2017. Since August 11, his mobile phone was found switched off. At the early hours of August 12, an unidentified man called Nazmul's wife Rabeya Khatun and demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom over mobile phone after telling that Nazmul was abducted.
Later on, police recovered Nazmul's body from a highway restaurant, named Rupashi Bangla Hotel, in Hatikumrul area under Salanga Police Station (PS) of the district in the morning of August 12, 2017.
The deceased's father lodged a murder case with the PS concerned in this regard.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court accusing seven people.
As one Md Saiful Islam alias Hazi Saiful died during the trial, the court pronounced the verdict against six on Tuesday after examining the case records and taking depositions of 11 witnesses.
KISHOREGANJ: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced three people to death for killing a man in Bhairab Upazila in 2008.
Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Fathema Jahan Sarna handed down the verdict.
The convicts are: Md Sumon, 35, son of late Safil Uddin of Bhairabpur Village under Bhairab Upazila in Kishoreganj; and Mst Salina Begum alias Shiuli, 36, wife of Md Abdul Quiyem Sarker of Doulatdiya Village under Bancharampur Upazila, and Shova alias Meghna, 32, daughter of late Abdul Khaleque of Sonarampur Village under Ashuganj Upazila in Brahmanbaria District.
They were also awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment in another section of the case, and fined Tk 10,000 each with an additional three months' jail if failed to pay.
According to the prosecution, the accused stabbed Mohammad Ali to death on January 6, 2008.
Later on, his father Shamsuddin filed a murder case with Bhairab PS.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against the three.
Assistant PP Md Mazharul Haque fought the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Tariqul Islam was on the side of the accused.
HABIGANJ: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a man to death in a triple murder case in Madhabpur Upazila in 2016.
Additional District and Sessions Court-1 Judge Syed Mohammad Kaiser Mosharraf Yusuf delivered the verdict in the afternoon in presence of the convict.
The convict is Shah Akaam alias Taher Uddin, 50, of Birsingh Para Village in Dharmaghar Union of Madhabpur.
Additional PP of the court Advocate Afzal Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, Shah Akaam had a conflict with his sister-in-law Jahanara Khatun over a land. Over the matter, in the evening of August 23, 2016, he stabbed Jahanara with a knife.
At that time, his niece Sharmin Akhter and nephew Shimul Mia came to save their mother and they were also stabbed.
Jahanara died on the spot and her children were taken to the hospital in critical condition, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Jahanara's brother-in-law Mohan Mia filed a murder case on August 24.
After investigation, the PBI submitted a charge-sheet against the accused to the court on December 5, 2017.
After examining 18 witnesses and the case evidences, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.
