Container of foreign cigarettes seized in Ctg

Chittagong Customs House has seized 1 crore 25 lakh sticks of foreign cigarettes, announcing the import of oranges at the Chittagong port.

Chittagong Custom House spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner Md. Saidul Islam confirmed the matter on Thursday.
He said, A consignment arrived at Chittagong port with a false declaration in the name of oranges. Based on a tip-off, a 40-ft container of the consignment was searched and 1 crore 25 lakh sticks foreign cigarettes of the Oscar and Lamar brand were seized.

He also said that the tax rate on orange imports is 90 percent. And in the case of cigarettes, this rate can be from 320 percent to 600 percent. Basically, these cigarettes have been imported using false declarations of oranges and fake documents for the purpose of revenue evasion. An attempt has been made to evade about Tk 30 crore. Legal action will be taken in this regard after the investigation.

It is worth noting that Dhaka-based importer Ahsan Corporation declared the consignment in the name of oranges on May 15. The C&F agent Diba Trading Limited was responsible for unloading the goods.
