Mahfuz Alam, Information Adviser to the interim government, has expressed regret for his use of divisive words and statements.
He made this apology through a post from his verified Facebook account around 5:00 PM on Thursday.
In a post titled “Country is greater than individual ideals, honour and emotions,” Mahfuz Alam wrote, “Unity among patriotic forces is inevitable. I sincerely apologize for any previous statements or choice of words that were divisive. If I remain in government even for another day, I want to work with respect and sensitivity towards all forces involved in the uprising.”
He further wrote, “If we can avoid the divisive slogans and labeling from old arrangements that have made large sections of people appear expendable, I hope the future state will be democratic and inclusive.”
Mahfuz Alam also stated, “The enemies of Bangladesh are united and aggressive. Sovereignty and all democratic institutions are under threat. The patriotic people who united during July uprising are now facing a long test. It is a test of unity and patience. We must pass this test.”
Recently, the Adviser became embroiled in controversy with Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir over several Facebook posts related to Liberation War.
In addition, BNP has demanded the resignation of two advisers following the swearing-in of Ishraque Hossain as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
The party has called for the resignation of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser for Local Government and Youth & Sports; and Mahfuz Alam, Information Adviser.
