After a seven-hour-long protest, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have ended their sit-in in the capital's Shahbagh intersection demanding justice for Shariar Alam Shammo.
The protest, which began at 10:00 AM on Thursday, concluded around 5:00 PM following an announcement by JCD President Rakibul Islam.
The protest was organized to demand justice for Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University student who was allegedly murdered. In addition to Shahbagh, JCD activists also staged demonstrations in front of the Intercontinental Hotel.
Announcing the end of the programme, Rakibul Islam stated, “We continued our protest despite the rain. Our activists are prepared to stay on the streets until justice for Shammo is served.”
He further urged the interim government to understand the sentiment of the student community, warning that “Chhatra Dal will not remain peaceful forever. If there is no visible progress in the investigation of Shammo’s murder, we will announce tougher programs.”
Speaking about the status of the investigation, the JCD president expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “Nine days have passed since the murder, and the authorities have only informed us about the arrest of three individuals. But there is no clear evidence yet that they were involved in the killing.”
Other participating activists echoed similar frustration, criticizing the authorities for failing to apprehend the real culprits. They demanded that those responsible for Shammo’s murder be brought to justice without further delay.
