CHATTOGRAM May 21: The Institute of Fine Arts at Chattogram University (CU) began relocating to the main campus on Tuesday, following a prolonged struggle by fine arts students. The move fulfils a long-standing demand for the institute's return.
Classes are scheduled to commence on 22 May, according to Professor Tanvir Haider, CU Proctor.
Meanwhile, furniture and equipment have been transferred from the institute, with 41 rooms relocated in the first phase. The remaining nine rooms will follow once ongoing examinations conclude.
Students welcomed the move with emotion and gratitude, calling it a long-overdue victory.
The breakthrough came after students staged a sit-in protest on 21 April, followed by an indefinite hunger strike starting at 3:00 pm the same day. Their primary demand was the issuance of an official relocation notice through a syndicate decision.
In response, the university administration convened an emergency syndicate meeting on 22 April. In its 561st session, the syndicate officially approved the relocation of the Institute of Fine Arts to the university campus.
The Fine Arts Institute had previously been shifted to Badshah Mia Road at Charukala College in the city in 2010.
Meanwhile, fine arts students began boycotting classes indefinitely on 4 November 2022, pressing a 22-point demand that included the renovation of dormitories and the library, as well as relocation to the Hathazari main campus.
