This is the first time that the National Tea Day is being celebrated in the country on the eve of International Tea Day. Internationally, May 21 is being celebrated as Tea Day.
Sources said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served as the first Bengali to serve as Chairman of the Tea Board from June 4, 1957 to October 23, 1958.
To commemorate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's contribution to the tea industry and the date of his joining as the Chairman of the Tea Board on June 4, it was decided to celebrate Tea Day nationally on his birth centenary in 2020.
Since the following year, Tea Day has been celebrated nationally on June 4, organized by the Tea Board, not in conjunction with International Tea Day. However, this is the first time that Tea Day is being celebrated in conjunction with the international day.
Speaking at the fifth National Tea Day program at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Wednesday, Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said that this time the date of Tea Day has been changed.
