Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin said the government has taken initiatives to preserved raw hide and ensure its fair price.
He said a high-level committee has met to ensure the right price of leather. The major decision was that the government will provide 30,000 tonnes of salt to madrasas and orphanages. They will preserve leather until they get a fair price.
He said these things at a press conference after the first meeting of the Committee to Ensure Proper Management of Qurbani-related Matters at Commerce Ministry on Wednesday.
He said training will be provided for proper management and preservation of raw hide in madrasas and orphanages. An instructional video will be made. They will be widely disseminated.
The committee will meet again the day after Eid, and supervision will be done to keep the price stable. He said earlier, raw-hide would come from all over the country at once.
So the leather would not get fair price and had to be sold at a lower price. That will not happen this time.
"Our chief adviser wants the poor to get a fair price. Our committee will meet again on Thursday. Then the price of the raw-hide will be determined. This year the price will be higher than last year," he added.
This committee was formed last Tuesday to ensure the fair price of the raw hide of the sacrificial animal and to ensure proper management of sacrificial animal.
The high-level committee has 17 members, the convener of which is the commerce adviser. In addition, the committee members include the Home Affairs Advisor, Industry Adviser, Road Transport and Bridges Adviser, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser, Local Government Adviser, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser, Religious Affairs Adviser, Information and Broadcasting Adviser, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (Ministry of Home Affairs), Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Industry Secretary, NGO representatives, representatives of religious institutions and private sector representatives (nominated by the government). The Commerce Secretary will be the member secretary of the committee.
The committee will determine the process for properly collecting and preserving hides and ensuring adequate supply of salt for this; ensure appropriate price for raw-hides and ensure its fair and efficient management.
