Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has announced a day-long sit-in at Shahbagh and Intercontinental intersections on Thursday, demanding justice for Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research, who was recently murdered.
The protest will run from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, according to a notice signed by JCD office secretary Jahangir Alam.
The demonstration aims to protest what the student organization alleges is negligence in the investigation into Shammo’s murder. JCD is calling for the immediate arrest of all individuals involved, including the main suspect and is demanding a fair trial and improved campus safety.
On Wednesday, JCD members staged a sit-in in front of university proctor’s office, demanding proctor's resignation over handling of the case.
In a related development, three more individuals have been arrested in connection with Shammo’s murder, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, JCD joined forces with several leftist student organizations under the banner 'Students Against Terrorism'.
The alliance is calling for the resignation of both Vice Chancellor and Proctor, accusing them of failing to ensure student safety in light of two murders on campus within past nine months.
