SATKHIRA, May 20: A human chain was formed on Tuesday in the district, demanding building of a clean city through proper waste management.

The research organization Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) and Education Culture and Diversity Protection Team jointly organized the human chain. It was held in front of Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park in the town.

Participants displayed placards with various slogans: 'Let's all join hands, we want pollution-free Satkhira', 'Clean environment, diseases will be destroyed', 'Clean environment, healthy life, ensures sustainable development', 'Let's make Satkhira pollution free', 'Build pollution-free housing by disposing garbage at the right place', 'Keep your area clean, create a beautiful environment', and 'Let's all take an oath to create a healthy and beautiful environment'.

They said, due to the lack of waste management, the city has become a garbage dump; there is no drainage system in the Satkhira town; garbage is floating in rain water; the city does not have a designated garbage dump; no dumping station has been constructed; despite being a first class municipality, the service quality of Satkhira Municipality is far below; and, if this situation continues, Satkhira Municipality will lose habitability.
Environmental Activist Madhab Chandra Dutto presided over the event.
