DIGHINALA, KHAGRACHHARI, May 20: This year Boro paddy yielded bumper in Dighinala Upazila of the district.
Advance Boro paddy cutting began in the beginning of the Bengali new year. Most of the Boro fields were cultivated by tribal communities.
According to sources at the upazila agriculture office, inspired by the upazila agriculture office, various new species of high-yielding paddy were cultivated by farmers. These included BRRI-100, 102, 104, 105, 107 and 108. This season, Boro was cultivated on 1,985 hectares (ha) of land against the target of 1,950 ha.
There are wide Boro paddy fields in Pablakhali Shantipur, Joykumar Karbari Para, Tarabonia, Boalkhali Kanthaltoli, and Babuchhara areas. Cutting and threshing activities are going on in full swing.
Farmer Dhon Bikash Chakma of Tarabonia Beel said, "We suffered damages of Aush and Aman four times of flood. Now Boro yielding has been good. I hope to get 20-25 maunds from one Kani (40 decimals) of land."
Another Somiron Chakma of Shantipur Beel said, "Boro yielding has been good in our beel. I hope to get 50-60 maunds of BRRI-104 from one acre.'
Dighinala Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Shahadat Hossain said, for this year's fair weather, Boro paddy has yielded bumper. BRRI-100 to 108 species are high yielding and rich with protein and zincs, he added.
