Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and over 200 others, including senior Awami League leaders, have been named in a murder case filed in connection with the killing of a factory worker during last year’s anti-government protest in Narayanganj.
Runa Begum, the mother of the deceased, filed the case late Friday night at Siddhirganj Police Station, accusing a total of 212 individuals—62 by name and between 150 to 160 unidentified, according to Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam. The matter became public on Monday.
Among the high-profile accused are former ministers Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman, ex-Narayanganj City Mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, and Shamim Osman’s son Imtinan Osman Ayon and nephew Azmeri Osman. Also named are former Narayanganj-2 MP Nazrul Islam Babu, Siddhirganj Thana Awami League President Mojibur Rahman, and General Secretary Yasin Haji.
The case centers on the death of 20-year-old Sajal Mia, who was reportedly shot during a protest on July 20, 2023. According to the case statement, Sajal joined a demonstration on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in front of a Dutch-Bangla Bank branch, where alleged Awami League supporters opened fire on protesters.
Sajal sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and later died from his injuries at a local hospital. His burial was conducted hastily, without an autopsy, as the family feared further unrest, the case statement said.
The plaintiff alleged that the attack was executed under the direct direction of senior Awami League figures, with Shamim Osman, his son Ayon, and nephew Azmeri Osman allegedly leading the operation on the ground.
