Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has emphasized the importance of adopting cloth and jute bags as alternatives to polythene to reduce plastic consumption in daily life.
"Plastic use must be reduced at all levels, and single-use polythene bags must be completely eliminated," she stated during an exchange with students and representatives of environmental organizations at the Circuit House in Rajshahi.
She highlighted the environmental damage caused by plastic and polythene, noting that the government has already launched various initiatives to encourage people to transition to sustainable alternatives, according to an official release.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar, BAPA General Secretary Alamgir Kabir, and representatives from environmental organizations, alongside students, journalists, and government officials, attended the event.
The participants underscored the need for increased awareness-building activities at the local level to promote environmental protection.
Expressing concern over the ongoing trend of filling ponds, canals, and other water bodies amid urban expansion, Rizwana stressed the importance of preserving natural reservoirs for water conservation and groundwater maintenance. She emphasized that public engagement is crucial for success in this regard.
Urging the youth to adopt an eco-conscious lifestyle, she remarked, "Every small step we take can lead to big changes."
Additionally, Rizwana directed the Deputy Commissioner to take necessary steps to restore ponds and water bodies in the district and assured government support for the process.
