NARAYANGANJ, May 16: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced two people to death and eight others to life-term imprisonment for killing a businessman in Rupganj Upazila in 2009.
Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Mominul Haque handed down the verdict at noon in presence of the accused.
The condemned convicts, who were awarded death sentence, are: Milon and Sajib.
The lifers are: Alam Mia, Jobayer, Mozammel, Aminul, Abdul Haque, Babul, Laskar Ahmed and Rahmat.
The court also acquitted one Rabin as the allegations brought against him could not be proven.
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Nurul Haque, owner of Imon Enterprise Rice Mills in Rupganj Upazila of the district, on August 20 in 2009.
The deceased's family lodged a murder case with Rupganj Police Station in this regard.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against 11 people.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
Court Police Inspector Kaiyum Khan confirmed the matter.
