KHULNA, May 16: A court in the district on Thursday sent eight alleged extortionists to jail, cancelling bail pleas in a case filed with Khalishpur Police Station.
Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order cancelling their bail pleas after the eight extortionists were produced before the court, confirmed Assistant Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) (Media) Khondokar Hossain Ahmmad.
The alleged extortionists are: Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Raihan, SM Shamaum Ismam, Sohel Sheikh, Sheikh Sazzad, Naymur Rahman, Sheikh Rakibul Islam, Mohidul Islam Razon and Towhidul Islam Razon, residents of different areas in the city.
KMP Assistant Commissioner Ahmmad said, a gang of youths went to the residence of Bappy Sarkar, son of Md Saheb Ali, at Bastuhara Colony No-2 Road in Khalishpur area in the city on Wednesday night.
The youths identified themselves as the leaders and coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to Bappy Sarkar, saying he (Bappy) earned huge money through illegal business and he possessed illegal arms.
The youths also demanded Tk five lakh as extortion to Bappy, saying that they will settle the matter with law enforcement agencies; otherwise he will be handed over to them.
The alleged extortionists made a fearful environment there as Bappy refused to pay the extortion money.
On information, police rushed in and arrested the youths.
A case was filed with Khalishpur PS in this connection on Thursday.
