VC among 3 BU officials removed; interim VC appointed

Barishal University (BU) Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer have been  removed from their positions facing several student protests.

The three removed officials -- Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shuchita Sharmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Professor Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid-- were dismissed from their roles by order of the President on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Toufik Alam, a faculty member of Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at  Rajshahi University (RU), has been appointed as Interim Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The information was announced in a notification signed by A S M Kashem, Senior Assistant Secretary of Government's General Universities Branch under Ministry of Education's Secondary and Higher Education Division, on Tuesday night. 

In an another notification from Ministry of Education on Tuesday granted Dr. Shuchita Sharmin permission to join her previous workplace, Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University. Similarly, Pro-Vice-Chancellor has been asked to re join Dhaka University and Treasurer is instructed to return to his previous position at Patuakhali Science and Technology University.

Following the Vice-Chancellor’s removal, 12 students, who had been on a hunger strike, ended their protest.
