Former Awami League lawmaker Momtaz Begum has been placed on a four-day remand in connection with a murder case linked to an attack on an anti-discrimination student protest in the capital's Mirpur.
She was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon. Investigating officer SI Monirul Islam of Mirpur Model Police Station had sought a seven-day remand, but the court granted four-day remand after hearing arguments from both prosecution and defense.
According to the remand plea, Momtaz, listed as the 49th accused in the case, allegedly encouraged party cadres to attack the protest. She was also the former MP of Manikganj-2 and the current president of Singair Upazila Awami League.
The case was filed by Beauty Akhter, mother of victim Md. Sagar, who died after being shot during the protest on July 19 last year at Mirpur-10. He was later found dead at a private hospital.
The first information report (FIR), filed on November 27, names 243 individuals including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and lists 250–400 unidentified accused. Police arrested Momtaz from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi late Monday night.
Investigators stated that custodial interrogation is necessary to uncover the full scope of the incident and identify others involved.
