The Election Commission (EC) on Monday suspended the registration of the Bangladesh Awami League following a government ban on the party's activities.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the decision at a press briefing held around 9:15pm at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon in the capital.
Earlier in the day, the home ministry issued a gazette notification banning all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated, associate, and like-minded organisations. The ban will remain in place until the International Crimes Tribunal completes ongoing trials against the party's leaders and activists.

The government cited allegations of crimes against humanity as the reason for the ban. In response, the EC formally suspended the party's registration.
